UWA Signs Historic 25-Year Concession for Luxury Lodge Development at Kazinga Channel

On December 10, 2024, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) entered into a landmark 25-year concession agreement with One Nature Hotels Limited for the development and operation of a luxury lodge at Channel Track near the famed Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park. The agreement represents a pivotal step in Uganda’s efforts to advance sustainable, high-end tourism.

The signing ceremony, held at the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities Headquarters in Kampala, was presided over by Hon. Tom Butime, the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities. The agreement was formally signed by UWA’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Prof. James Kalema, and One Nature Hotels Limited’s Managing Director, Eng. Hani Saliba.

This project signifies a major commitment to conservation-focused tourism, with the concessionaire pledging a $10 million investment to develop the lodge. Additionally, One Nature Hotels Limited has allocated $1 million to establish boat services on the Kazinga Channel, offering visitors unmatched opportunities for wildlife viewing and leisure along this iconic waterway.

To further diversify Uganda’s luxury tourism offerings, the concessionaire has also secured land in Rushaga, outside the park. They plan to develop facilities aimed at attracting affluent visitors, particularly from the Middle East and other global markets.

Minister Butime emphasized that this agreement aligns with Uganda’s strategic vision to attract high-value tourism while ensuring environmental sustainability and benefiting local communities. This partnership is expected to elevate Queen Elizabeth National Park’s status as a premier global destination for nature enthusiasts and luxury travelers alike.
